On the outskirts of Cheonan is the Gakwonsa Temple. Take the 24 bus from the city center until it ends then walk up a big hill then up even bigger steps and after almost dying from that climb you will arrive at the top of a mountain where the temple is. You will be rewarded with one of the largest Buddah statues in Korea. He is almost 50 feet tall and made of bronze. Pretty awe-inspiring after that wicked climb.
Those damn stairs.
A well deserved photo op.
There were a few lanterns still up from Buddha’s Birthday a few weeks ago. Pretty.
Just down a little path are the temple buildings.
A little one.
The main building. These pictures really do not do the intricate carving and paint color justice. It is beautiful.
Inside the temple there were 3 Buddhas. These were taken with my zoom. I didn’t want to go inside. The temple is still used, there was actually a funeral going on when we got there.
And then my camera died. Be sure to charge your batteries before leaving the house, friends. If you’re the hiking type there is a trail you can take to go even further up the mountain. The temple is open all the time, many of my coworkers visited in the rain and snow. If you can handle hiking in negative degree weather the snow makes for really lovely photos.
